Installing Software
The installation sources and methods for installing software on Kalpa in order of preference are as follows:
- Flatpaks (Flathub) via
flatpak install
or Discover - User Distrobox
- Root Distrobox
- transactional-update
Unsupported Software Installation Methods
- opi
- packman
- nix
- snapd
- AppImage
What does "Unsupported" mean?
Unsupported, in this context means, that we do not believe it will work, or will not provide a good experience. If you use any of these methods to install software on Kalpa, and experience issues, you are on your own. The Developers will close any bugs on systems using these unsupported methods as WONTFIX
Third Party Repositories
In general, the use of Third-Party RPM repositories, is not supported. Primary installation of applications should be through one of the methods listed above.
The following third-party/proprietary repos have been tested by the developers, and found to generally be trouble-free with Kalpa, please follow the links for specific instructions.
Support for these Third Party methods has limited support, and any issues should be raised with the original vendor.
SELinux issues
SELinux can occasionally cause issues with some things, and we are still working on writing new policies for problems as we find them. Current issues for which we don't yet have policy written, and will require overrides are documented here.
If you suspect you are running into an SELinux issue, the following three steps will help you determine if this is, in fact, the case.
$ sudo ausearch -m AVC,USER_AVC,SELINUX_ERR,USER_SELINUX_ERR -ts recent
$ sudo journalctl -t setroubleshoot
$ sudo dmesg | grep -i -e type=1300 -e type=1400
If you run across a "new" SELinux issue, that is not covered below, please file a Bug
- Steam/Proton (and most other WINE based SELinux issues, like Lutris/Bottles/etc)
- Team Fortress 2
- Android Studio
